The intra-Mercurial planet Vulcan

Vulcan is unsupported; general relativity explains Mercury’s anomalous precession, and no substantial intra-Mercurial planet has been detected.

Specific allegation

Nineteenth-century astronomers proposed Vulcan, a planet inside Mercury’s orbit, to explain Mercury’s perihelion anomaly. The allegation here is that Vulcan existed but was erased from history, rather than a provisional hypothesis displaced by a better physical theory.

Chronology and context

Le Verrier proposed the body in 1859. Reported solar transits were inconsistent and never yielded a repeatable orbit. In 1915 Einstein’s general relativity accounted for Mercury’s residual perihelion advance, changing the explanation without suppressing an established planet.

Observations and physical record

A real planet would transit predictably, reflect sunlight, and perturb planetary trajectories. Modern solar observations and spacecraft ranging provide stronger constraints than nineteenth-century telescopes. Relativistic orbital calculations match Mercury’s motion without Vulcan; MESSENGER refined the orbital record.

Established scientific account

General relativity explains the extra advance that motivated the search. Some historical spots may have been sunspots or optical errors. Tiny asteroids or dust near the Sun are not excluded, but a substantial planet capable of explaining the anomaly is not present in the measured dynamics.

Limits and contrary evidence

Individual historical reports cannot always be identified today, and minor intra-Mercurial matter could exist. Those limits do not support a planet-sized body: its transits and gravitational effects would recur. This is an example of resolving a real anomaly through better theory, not proof of a hidden discovery.

What could change the assessment

A revived claim needs a coherent orbit, repeated independent observations, mass estimates consistent with perturbations, and successful transit or spacecraft predictions. Candidate images must be checked against sunspots and artifacts. Old reports without a repeatable trajectory are not adequate evidence.

Le Verrier’s inference was reasonable given the measurements and Newtonian model available at the time. General relativity later predicted the residual without adding a planet, and the prediction matched observation. The historical episode is evidence that hypotheses can be displaced by a better testable theory, not that the original object was hidden.

Calibrated conclusion

Vulcan is unsupported; general relativity explains Mercury’s anomalous precession, and no substantial intra-Mercurial planet has been detected.
