“Earth’s core stopped spinning”

The inner core did not simply stop, and Earth’s whole core remains active. Relative inner-core rotation is a subtle open question.

Specific allegation

A 2023 seismic study suggested the inner core’s relative rotation may have slowed or changed direction compared with the mantle. Headlines turned this into “Earth’s core stopped,” sometimes adding disaster or suppression. The research concerns small relative motions inferred from repeating earthquake waves, not the whole core halting.

Chronology and context

Researchers compared seismic waves from repeating earthquakes over decades. A 2023 paper proposed variation in inner-core rotation; later studies suggested other patterns. The debate is public. The liquid outer core still convects and generates the geomagnetic field; no observation shows all core motion stopped.

Observations and physical record

The inference comes from small travel-time changes along seismic paths, not a direct movie of the core. Different interpretations can involve rotation, deformation, or structural variation. The datasets are limited and reanalyzed openly; no sudden global event accompanied the reported change.

Established scientific account

Earth has a solid inner core and liquid outer core. Relative rotation depends on the chosen mantle reference frame; a slowdown is not absolute stillness. Seismic waveforms constrain dynamics indirectly, and the relationship between inner-core motion and surface hazards is not established.

Limits and contrary evidence

The rotation rate is debated and global repeat-event coverage is limited. Scientists lack a complete dynamical model, which is genuine uncertainty. It does not mean the entire core stopped, nor provide evidence of impending disaster or a concealed emergency.

What could change the assessment

More repeating earthquakes, denser seismic stations, and independent waveform methods can distinguish rotation from structural change. Geomagnetic observations offer complementary constraints. Any hazard claim must specify a mechanism and measurable surface signal, not infer catastrophe from a headline.

“Stopped” is misleading because the study estimates rotation relative to the mantle from seismic travel-time comparisons. A change in relative rate does not mean all material has ceased motion. The paper’s result can be revised as methods and event catalogs improve; no independent evidence links it to abrupt surface danger.

Calibrated conclusion

The inner core did not simply stop, and Earth’s whole core remains active. Relative inner-core rotation is a subtle open question.
