The seismic inner core is actually a hollow cavity

A hollow inner core is contradicted by global seismology and geodesy. Details remain under study, but it is a dense central region.

Specific allegation

Some hollow-Earth claims reinterpret the inner core as a shell around a central cavity or interior sun. Such a model must match seismic waves crossing the center, Earth’s rotational inertia, and gravity. Those measurements come from global observations, not a single institutional diagram.

Chronology and context

Seismic phases and normal modes revealed a dense inner core; the PREM model summarizes global earthquake travel times. Later work refines boundaries and anisotropy, but observations continue to require a central dense region. No dataset reports the strong travel-time or gravity anomalies expected from a giant cavity.

Observations and physical record

P-waves cross the core and S-waves are blocked by the liquid outer layer in observed patterns. Gravity and moment of inertia require central density. A large cavity would alter wave speeds and mass distribution. These independent records are incompatible with an empty center.

Established scientific account

Seismic shadow zones and normal modes constrain layered structure. The outer core’s conductive fluid powers geodynamo models. A dense inner core fits travel times and rotation; an empty cavity does not. Scientific uncertainty concerns composition and anisotropy, not whether the center is a void.

Limits and contrary evidence

The inner core’s dimensions and composition are still studied. This uncertainty does not make it hollow. No predicted cavity reflections or travel-time anomalies appear in global records. Confusing unknown properties with absence of evidence for a solid body reverses the burden of proof.

What could change the assessment

A cavity model must quantitatively fit global waveforms, gravity harmonics, normal modes, and moment of inertia. Open seismic records allow independent analyses. A radically different model could be considered if it predicted all measurements better; a single anecdotal waveform is insufficient.

A scientific model of the core is inferred rather than directly photographed, but inference is not guesswork: it must fit thousands of travel paths and global normal modes. A cavity would change those patterns in systematic ways. The burden is to publish calculations that match the full record, not to point out that no borehole reaches the center.

Calibrated conclusion

A hollow inner core is contradicted by global seismology and geodesy. Details remain under study, but it is a dense central region.
