SS Poet: the freighter that failed to arrive

[ MARITIME & GEOGRAPHIC MYSTERIES // SHIP ]

Event and chronology

The American freighter Poet sailed from Philadelphia toward Port Said in October 1980 with a grain cargo and 34 crew members. She did not make scheduled contact or arrive. The Coast Guard and other agencies searched the route, but no wreckage, distress message or confirmed survivor was found.

What later accounts allege

Because Poet disappeared in the North Atlantic without a confirmed distress call, later writers have grouped it with paranormal zones or alleged secret cargo. Claims about its load or final destination often rely on repetition rather than a cited manifest or inquiry.

Records, searches and conditions

U.S. Coast Guard search information, shipping schedules and Maritime Administration records establish the voyage and response. Available weather records can describe broad conditions, but do not reveal the vessel’s exact route or condition at sea; no confirmed physical trace has been linked to Poet.

Independent and contrary evidence

A single missing ship with no wreck is compatible with many conventional failures: weather damage, machinery trouble, collision or flooding. The lack of a radio distress call may reflect sudden catastrophe, equipment failure or communications conditions, not a specific conspiracy.

What remains unknown

The cause, location, timing and even possible last contact remain uncertain. Without a wreck, the case cannot be resolved by hull examination, and later retellings can easily confuse a reported sighting with a verified one.

Assessment

The public record supports non-arrival and an unsuccessful search, not a ghost ship or covert operation. A verified wreck, radio transcript, or independently authenticated sighting would change the analysis; no conclusion should be stronger than the surviving evidence.
