Lake Michigan Triangle: a regional disappearance legend
[ MARITIME & GEOGRAPHIC MYSTERIES // LEGEND ]
Event and chronology
The Lake Michigan Triangle is a later label for an area where stories cluster around ship and aircraft losses, including the schooner Thomas Hume in 1891 and other Great Lakes incidents. The named boundaries and the cases included vary across books and websites.
What later accounts allege
The allegation is that this part of the lake causes vessels or aircraft to vanish through a paranormal force, magnetic anomaly or time distortion. Lists often combine unrelated events without comparing traffic, weather or reporting periods.
Records, searches and conditions
Great Lakes vessel registries, Coast Guard histories, newspaper archives and National Weather Service records establish individual incidents and conditions. Thomas Hume’s loss remains unresolved, but no original record identifies a shared cause connecting it to later cases.
Independent and contrary evidence
Lake Michigan has storms, cold water, shoals, commercial routes and changing weather; these known risks can produce serious casualties. Aircraft cases and shipwrecks involve different mechanisms and should not be pooled as if they were one exposure category.
What remains unknown
The exact fate of some crews and the cause of particular wrecks remain unknown. The “triangle” boundary is not standardized, so claims of an excess cannot be tested without a defined area, period and denominator of trips or flight hours.
Assessment
A paranormal Great Lakes zone is not established by the case lists. A transparent incident database with exposure-adjusted comparisons and independently verified anomalies could change that assessment; unresolved individual losses alone cannot.
