Kaz II: the drifting yacht
[ MARITIME & GEOGRAPHIC MYSTERIES // MODERN ]
Event and chronology
The 12-metre yacht Kaz II left Airlie Beach, Queensland, in April 2007 with three men aboard. It was sighted adrift days later and recovered with no crew. The yacht’s engine was running, a computer and meal remained aboard, and searchers found no immediate sign of a major storm or collision.
What later accounts allege
The apparent normality of the yacht has been framed as a “ghost ship” mystery, with speculation that the men were removed by a force or that a cover-up hid an encounter. Online narratives often elevate minor onboard details into proof.
Records, searches and conditions
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau and Queensland coroner reviewed the vessel, available video and the men’s experience. Investigators considered an accidental fall overboard during attempts to retrieve a person or equipment; no single sequence could be confirmed, and there was no evidence of a supernatural event.
Independent and contrary evidence
The boat was recoverable and was examined. Ordinary overboard accidents can occur rapidly, especially when people are separated from the yacht without lifejackets. The absence of a distress call does not imply an intervention when events may have unfolded within minutes.
What remains unknown
No bodies were recovered and the initiating accident is unknown. The vessel’s video covers only part of the voyage and cannot establish what happened later. It remains possible that more than one person entered the water in a rescue attempt.
Assessment
The unexplained loss of three people is not evidence that the yacht violated normal physics. A recovered body with diagnostic evidence, a verified witness, or new navigational and video data establishing a different event would change the assessment; current evidence favors accidental overboard loss.
