MV Joyita: the abandoned vessel in the Pacific
[ MARITIME & GEOGRAPHIC MYSTERIES // MODERN ]
Event and chronology
The small trading vessel Joyita departed Apia, Samoa, for the Tokelau Islands in October 1955 and did not arrive. A search was launched; a month later she was found adrift far from her intended route, with no passengers or crew. The hull remained afloat despite damage and flooding.
What later accounts allege
The empty vessel has generated theories of piracy, mutiny, secret cargo or a deliberate state operation. Some retellings describe a completely intact ship with its crew inexplicably removed, overlooking serious equipment and seaworthiness problems.
Records, searches and conditions
The New Zealand inquiry recorded the route, radio and engine problems, makeshift repairs, medical supplies, missing lifeboats and vessel condition. Investigators concluded that people probably abandoned ship, but could not establish exactly when or why; the radio was capable of transmitting distress over a limited range.
Independent and contrary evidence
The vessel’s poor condition and loss of propulsion provide ordinary reasons for an evacuation, while the survivors had limited communications and no rescue. Discovery of the hull demonstrated that Joyita had not simply disappeared. The inquiry did not prove piracy or a supernatural event.
What remains unknown
The fate of all aboard and the exact trigger for abandoning a still-floating ship remain unresolved. The search area and route estimates are uncertain, and the later drift position cannot alone identify where the crew entered the water.
Assessment
A real disappearance remains without a definitive sequence. The record makes an emergency abandonment more plausible than conspiracy, but does not settle it. A new primary radio log, identified remains, or contemporaneous evidence tying the crew to a crime would materially revise the assessment.
