The Claim That 5G Radio Waves Caused COVID-19

ASSESSMENT: Contradicted by virology and transmission evidence.

The claim and its context

COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV-2, a coronavirus identified and sequenced in biological samples. Radio waves cannot create or transmit a virus; outbreaks occurred where 5G was absent. The 5G claim conflates electromagnetic exposure with infectious transmission.

The narrative circulated in early 2020 as both new telecommunications infrastructure and COVID-19 raised public concern. Some facilities were vandalized after rumors linked them to illness. Its geographic predictions failed: outbreaks occurred under varied network conditions.

What is documented

Radiofrequency exposure is a physical phenomenon with safety standards and ongoing research. SARS-CoV-2 has a genome, replicates biologically, and spreads between people. No credible study demonstrates that 5G creates coronavirus or causes the disease.

Clinical and epidemiological evidence

Outbreaks occurred across regions with diverse infrastructure, including places without 5G. Laboratory, clinical, and epidemiological evidence identifies viral infection as the cause. Radiofrequency studies do not establish a mechanism for respiratory-virus transmission.

Contrary evidence and genuine uncertainty

RF exposure can be studied for health effects independently, and standards are periodically reviewed. That uncertainty does not create a viral mechanism. Concerns about one exposure cannot substitute for a causal link to infection.

Calibrated assessment

The claim is contradicted by biology and epidemiology. Public-health measures should address demonstrated transmission routes, not infrastructure rumors. Attacks on workers or equipment cause harm without reducing infection risk.

A responsible evidence test

Ask whether the explanation predicts disease in places without 5G and accounts for viral sequencing and transmission chains. Assess radiofrequency questions separately. Seek clinical advice about symptoms rather than attributing them to network technology.
