Ocean iron fertilization and carbon removal

The claim

Claim: iron fertilization secretly buried vast carbon or manipulated climate. Field tests are real; durable sequestration at scale is unproven. This file tests the narrow allegation rather than treating secrecy, coincidence, or public controversy as evidence by themselves.

Chronology

Experiments added iron to limited ocean patches since the 1990s; the 2012 Haida Gwaii release renewed governance debate. Chronology helps separate contemporaneous knowledge from later interpretation; sequence alone cannot establish a causal relationship.

Primary record and data

Papers, ship logs, satellite blooms, and sediment traps document activity, not permanent long-term storage. Original records establish what was measured or decided, while independent work is needed to test methods and institutional conclusions.

Independent scientific evidence

Iron can stimulate plankton; carbon may recycle near the surface, while export and ecological effects remain uncertain. Convergent observations and a plausible mechanism carry more weight than a single image, anecdote, or disputed quotation.

Alternative explanations

A bloom is not a carbon-removal measure; short trials and incomplete baselines cannot establish ocean-scale effects. A strong alternative must explain the observations and remain open to disconfirmation; ordinary causes deserve the same scrutiny as extraordinary ones.

Limitations and uncertainty

Research is limited by small test scales, short observations, ecological uncertainties, and governance gaps; these limits do not establish climate-scale deployment. Uncertainty is stated explicitly rather than treated as support for the strongest version of a claim.

Calibrated verdict

Local biological effects are possible; climate-scale sequestration and secret deployment are unsupported. Documented research, emissions, negligence, or secrecy should not be conflated with a broader unsupported coordinated plot.

Testable evidence requirements

Measure deep carbon flux over time, use controls, monitor ecosystems, and disclose release material, quantity, permits, and routes. A persuasive claim specifies what new evidence would change the assessment and allows independent replication, including negative results.
