Libby, Montana: asbestos-bearing vermiculite
The allegation
Vermiculite mined near Libby contained asbestos fibers. Workers and residents were exposed; the question is warning and exposure control, not assigning all disease to one source.
Timeline
W.R. Grace operated the mine 1963–1990. EPA investigation began in 1999 and declared a public-health emergency in 2009; remediation continues.
What the record establishes
EPA and ATSDR document contamination and exposure. W.R. Grace defendants were acquitted in the 2009 federal criminal trial; that does not erase site evidence.
Counterevidence and alternative explanations
Risk varies with fiber, concentration, duration, and route. Smoking affects lung cancer risk but not mesothelioma.
Uncertainty and limits
Historical doses are reconstructed from incomplete records and cannot identify cause of each case.
Calibrated skeptical verdict
Exposure is established; acquittals limit claims of criminally proven concealment. Individual diagnoses require separate evidence.
What could change the assessment
Mine files, property tests, cohorts, and contemporaneous warnings could change responsibility and risk estimates.
