“CO2 is plant food” and climate claims

The claim

Claim: plant use of CO2 means emissions cannot cause harm. Fertilization effects coexist with warming and ocean acidification. This file tests the narrow allegation rather than treating secrecy, coincidence, or public controversy as evidence by themselves.

Chronology

CO2 rose from about 280 ppm before industry to above 420 ppm; experiments show varied plant responses. Chronology helps separate contemporaneous knowledge from later interpretation; sequence alone cannot establish a causal relationship.

Primary record and data

NOAA records, isotope data, FACE experiments, and ocean chemistry measure carbon rise and biological response. Original records establish what was measured or decided, while independent work is needed to test methods and institutional conclusions.

Independent scientific evidence

CO2 traps infrared heat and dissolves in seawater; crop effects depend on nutrients, water, species, and heat. Convergent observations and a plausible mechanism carry more weight than a single image, anecdote, or disputed quotation.

Alternative explanations

Some crops benefit under elevated CO2, but chambers do not reproduce every field constraint. A strong alternative must explain the observations and remain open to disconfirmation; ordinary causes deserve the same scrutiny as extraordinary ones.

Limitations and uncertainty

Long records include coverage changes, instrument uncertainty, and methodological choices; independent datasets and explicit uncertainty ranges help bound conclusions. Uncertainty is stated explicitly rather than treated as support for the strongest version of a claim.

Calibrated verdict

Plant nutrient value does not negate greenhouse physics; net impacts differ across ecosystems. Documented research, emissions, negligence, or secrecy should not be conflated with a broader unsupported coordinated plot.

Testable evidence requirements

Combine field trials, yields, nutrient data, ocean pH, and carbon budgets across regions. A persuasive claim specifies what new evidence would change the assessment and allows independent replication, including negative results.
