M-Audio AIR 192|6
A two-channel USB interface with Crystal preamps, separate instrument inputs, MIDI, and direct-monitor control.
IDENTIFICATION: Manufacturer/model: M-Audio AIR 192|6 USB audio/MIDI interface. Verify the full model and hardware/firmware revision on the unit; similarly named generations may have different ports, drivers, or channel counts.
Specifications
| Catalog subcategory | USB audio interfaces |
|---|---|
| Model / SKU identity | M-Audio AIR 192|6 USB audio/MIDI interface; model-level identity, not a retailer bundle SKU. |
| Analog, digital I/O and host channels | 2-in/2-out USB audio: two analog capture channels; two XLR/TRS combo mic/line inputs plus two front instrument jacks provide selectable source connections, not four independent USB capture streams. Two balanced TRS outputs, headphone out, and MIDI DIN I/O. |
| Conversion, sample rate and bit depth | 24-bit; 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, and 192 kHz. |
| Mic preamps / phantom power | Two M-Audio Crystal mic preamps on the combo inputs; switchable +48 V phantom power. The two front instrument inputs have dedicated high-impedance circuitry; check source-selection behavior in the manual. |
| USB generation / class compliance | USB-C connector with USB 2.0 transport; class-compliant on macOS, with M-Audio Windows ASIO driver; bus-powered. Use the supplied data cable or an equivalent USB data cable, and account for host-port power limits. |
Drivers, host compatibility & latency
- Windows requires the M-Audio AIR driver for low-latency ASIO operation; macOS uses class-compliant Core Audio. Download current drivers/manuals from M-Audio and verify OS support; do not rely on legacy bundled-software compatibility.
- Direct monitoring avoids the computer round trip for input monitoring; software monitoring delay varies with driver, buffer, sample rate, and system load. Very small buffers can cause glitches even when the interface is functioning normally.
- For predictable recording, match the interface and DAW sample rates, select the model-specific manufacturer driver where required, test the intended buffer under real session load, and retain a higher-buffer fallback for dense projects.
Identification and preservation notes
Photograph the underside model label and connector panel; record serial/model identifiers, revision, firmware, included power supply, optical mode, and installed driver version. Do not infer channel count or supported sample rate from a connector or product-family name alone.
